Prelim Task

The Prelim task is part of the spec and you have to complete it. We think it is there for two reasons. First of all, it gives you a benchmark so that you have something to compare your progress to. Also it makes you practise some of the key skills. We think that crossing the line is not really something that needs much practise. In all our tasks before we had even heard of this rule, we never crossed the line because instinctively you know it is wrong to reverse the posiitons of the characters. However, when we filmed in a very small space, it was harder not to do it. We think a more important rule is the one about changing your angle by more than 30 degrees when filming for a match on action to avoid a jump. Practising matches on action was very important though. It's the basis of continuity editing and we're glad we got the chance to think about it and work out how to avoid some mistakes. Shot / reverse shot is another very basic shot, and we will definitely need it in our opening. This showed us how getting the right framing is the key to this shot. The actors also need a lot of directing not to move out of the right composition.

  1. The dialogue was too fast and so was the whole video. We didn't give the audience much time to fully absorb what was going on.

  2. After reviewing our work, I felt that we edited it so it was cutting too fast as it felt quite hectic in the conversation and there was a slight jump near the beginning, however I felt that this was quite successful given that we are still learning and experimenting with film and editing techniques.

  3. Studying the two prelim tasks it is evident there is a few mistakes. The first mistake visible is the camera wobble during the establishing shot. This is because the camera was being held not on a stable tripod. The next noticeable mistake is during the dialogue, the two talking did not leave a pause between each line of speech. This made it very hard to edit and the shot-reverse-shot did not look as it was suppose to. Both groups had this problem when editing as the dialogue is over with in three seconds.

The prelim task was well worth doing as it allowed us to prepare for our actual coursework.

  4. After looking at the two prelims tasks, I have noticed that there are some sequences that are not edited correctly. The camera placement was not accurate in either of the tasks. This consisted of the camera wobbling in some parts of the sequence. Also the editing in the prelims tasks were not bad. However in both of the tasks, there was a jump from one scene to another, this leading to a black flick, showing that the editing was not squeezed together and therefore the scenes did not run smoothly. In both of the tasks, the dialogue was rushed which made it seem natural. Overall, I believe that both of the tasks were successful despite a few errors.
