Research on titles and credits
Titles Sequence Research
Cabin in the woods
- From the start mechanical sounds is the only thing we can hear, as we can easily recognise the sound of machines being used. This goes well with the Lionsgate’s logo being used in this movie.
- The company’s logo is introduced to us within the 18 seconds mark.
- From the beginning and up until the 21 second mark the main colours we saw were red and bronze. Because of this it creates a dark atmosphere.
- At the 22 second mark it goes into a blank black screen. This creates a sense of mystery and is also an effective way to make the audience be more attentive.
- The music being played in the background builds.
- The title can be finally seen at the 2 minutes and 49 seconds mark. It appears on the screen very suddenly and alongside there is a playing of loud music that almost resembles the sound of screams.
- It begins with the film studio’s name, New Line Cinema. This can be seen at the 4 second mark.
- During this very sinister like music is being played and it is also quite loud. This immediately sets a frightening atmosphere.
- At the 11 second mark it introduces the movie directors. Some names are shown in a black background with white lettering. The letters are in a font where it seems like it was hand written.
- The title is shown at the 25 second mark and is presented in white faded capital letters.
- The title is introduced straight away and can be seen at the 8 second mark.
- Jazz music is being played in the background. It is also the type of music which creates a comical atmosphere. This is ironic because the story of the film includes a murder and murders are not in the slightest bit funny. Because of this it may gain more attention.
- All the names of the actors playing a part in this movie are presented within a diagram of a body coloured in pure black.
To get a better understanding of the way titles and credits are presented in a horror genre film, I have researched films that are based on this particular genre. This could further my knowledge and also potentially allow us to present our titles and credits in a way where we could get more marks for it. So far our group has not yet decided in the way in which we will present our titles and credits. From watching the title sequences in the movies I have researched, it is common to have eerie music playing as we see the titles and credits rolling in. This is usually associated in with dark colours being used and as for the colour of the text, colours like red or black are common. It is peculiar to see bright colours in horror films as it does not go well with the mood that horror films usually try to establish. You often feel frightened and wary as a horror film starts.
When non-diegetic sound is being played, I have found out that it may have to quiet as it must not attract attention, instead all the attention should be focused on the movie that is being played. The music should help in the making of the atmosphere we desire. It should help build up tension as the story unveils itself. From my research I have learnt that music is a fundamental when trying to create an atmosphere.
